Hi Skip,

Thanks for your comment! Good point about press releases! We did use one, but we didn't put it out over the "wire". Instead, we placed one on our site from which various blogs could quote. This allowed us to get our message out fairly inexpensively (especially since we don't have our premium product yet). Once we get our premium product in place and for sale, we'll probably try the SEO optimized release over the wire and see how that fares for us.

Thanks once again!

I love your prescription for a launch sequence. In particular, thanks for emphasizing the need to understand your market and competition. I've seen too many entrepreneurs fail on this front. I also like the way your suggest starting with smaller blogs and working to the most sophisticated ones. I've blogged about a similar strategy in testing out your ideas "bouncing ball" at http://smallbusiness.logoworks.com/marketing/2008/03/10/bouncing-your-idea-ball/

I'm wondering if you used press releases during your launch sequence. If so, when did you use them and what results did you get? We've had good results with SEO optimized press releases at times and wonder if you've had similar experiences.

Thanks!

Hi, Alex,

I enjoyed your post. I was particularly intrigued by your complaint that one of your competitors bashed webnotes,, which you consider to be "extremely unprofessional". This reminded me one of your interviews, which I came across before your public launch, and which I quoted above. I was just curious whether you consider that "bashing". Well, I personally do not mind being bashed so long as it is true, and I happen to think the quote above, whether you consider it bashing or not, is not quite factual.

Business is competition, and there can be many kinds of competitive dynamics -- it is up to us participants to choose what we want. When others mischaracterizes and pigeonholes Diigo (e.g. as a mere "community creation tool") , we naturally will always try our best to explain our points of view in the court of public opinions, while trying to be as factual as we can. I am sure you understand.

There have been a large number of failures, and few successes in the area of research tools in general, and annotation tools in particular. We welcome webnotes as a new entrant and look forward to seeing your progress.

Hi Wade,

Thanks for keeping up with our blog! We always like hearing from you and the other guys at Diigo. Together, we can certainly revolutionize the way information is collected across the internet. As we've said before, we have the utmost respect for you and your product.

We love your community creation tools, so keep up the hard work! Keep in touch.

Bashing?

"Most of these products are not exactly the highest of quality, and very few of them actually offer any sort of organizational structure that researchers need in order to do their work. "
