It’s a good question. The reason we chose encryption over SSL is that in addition to providing some degree of transport layer security (what SSL does), encryption also makes it much more difficult for malicious websites to sniff the contents of your highlights and sticky notes before they even reach the transport layer.

We are still considering whether or not to add SSL to WebNotes. The security benefits of doing so speak for themselves. The drawbacks would be the additional load on our servers of having to do another layer of encryption/decryption. Whether SSL would cause a significant additional load on our servers remains to be seen and is something we’ll experiment with if/when we deem it prudent.
